Welcome to the Syracuse American Legion

This website was developed for people to come and see what the American Legion is doing in the Syracuse community.

Veterans are a special breed.  We all have that inherent pride in knowing we stood up for the defense of our Country.  But it can come at a cost.  The American Legion is one of the oldest veteran organizations in the world. It , provides a home for us and fights for our rights.

The Legion is a non-profit organization that depends on membership and fundraising to support The American Legion and our community projects.

The American Legion of Onondaga County and Syracuse consists of twenty individual American Legion Posts.  Our County is in the 5th District of New York, which consists of Onondaga, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego, and Oneida Counties.  There are eleven districts within the American Legion Department of New York State.  Membership in Onondaga County is more than twenty-eight thousand.

The Legion has four goals that our work revolves around:

  • Supporting a Strong National Security
  • Taking Care of Veterans
  • Mentoring Youth
  • Promoting Patriotism and Honor

Additionally, Community Service is vital within our group.

Veterans of all ages and conflicts, who served in peacetime or not, are members.  Many Posts have a social atmosphere where veterans and their families can get together.  But this is small compared to the support we give to many community projects, whether veteran-related or not.  For many younger veterans, family and work take up a lot of time.  You may not have the time or desire to participate in activities, and that’s perfectly alright.  But your membership drives and supports Legion services and knows that the Legion will always be here to help.
