Convention Awards Ceremony – Part Two

June 7, 2025

Syracuse, NY – The County Awards ceremony held during the 2025 County Convention. The American Legion Medal of Merit was awarded to 1st Vice Commander James Bass and County Historian Jerome Orton

The American Legion relies on fundraising and developing personal contacts. James Bass has proven himself to be the perfect man for this role. His enthusiasm and commitment to the Legion, even after 25 years, is personally humbling and well-known by all. Jim has held several positions within the Legion, including Past County Commander, and his leadership has left a lasting impact on our community.

Jim is the yearly coordinator of the American Legion’s presence at the New York State Fair, a significant fundraising event for the Legion as well as the CNY Veterans Parade and Expo. Present every day and always with a smile, he is steadfast and an inspiration for us all.

JAMES R. BASS. In honor of his selfless dedication, personal integrity, drive towards perfection with his leadership of Onondaga County at the New York State Fair and the CNY Parade and Expo during the 2024/2025 American Legion year.

As County Historian, Jerry Orton shines. For a member with his years of service, he is always present, always contributes, always donates, and does it with a smile…always.

As a multi-award-winning American Legion historian, Jerry is always ready with some nugget of historical interest. He’s at almost every event, clearly and proudly American Legion. Even when poaching on DAV turf at the Fair.

On behalf of the leadership of the Onondaga County American Legion and the men and women who can call Jerry Orton a friend and mentor, we are honored to award the American Legion Medal of Merit as follows:

JEROME L. ORTON, for his selfless dedication to the recording of Military and American Legion History, his openness to share that knowledge with all, in addition to his personal integrity and drive towards perfection, all in his stewardship of the Onondaga County Office of Historian for the 2024/2025 American Legion year.
